Calcium hypochlorite is a strong bactericide and algicide.  This chlorine containing compound has been widely used in dry form as a disinfecting agent in pools and municipal water treatment since 1928.  Containing 65% available chlorine, it is available in a number of package sizes in dry granular or tablet form.  This powerful oxidizer may cause severe chemical burns, fires or explosions if handled improperly, so follow directions carefully.  Do not confuse calcium tablets with trichlor tablets.  Do not mix the two types or fire or explosion will occur.

Even when other chemicals are used as the general disinfectant, calcium hypochlorite is frequently used for shocking because it is effective and economical.  Calcium hypochlorite additions to the pool/spa water raise the pH and calcium hardness levels.  Calcium hypochlorite is most commonly recognized as a "Bag of Shock".

Calcium hypochlorite should always be pre-dissolved in a bucket of water before adding to the pool.  Calcium dissolves slowly and may sit on the floor of the pool and cause damage or bleaching if allowed to sit on the surface.  Calcium will temporarily cloud the water when it is added because of the calcium content.  If calcium hypochlorite is used in vinyl liner pools on a regular basis it will cause chalking on the liner surface and can shorten the life of the liner.  We recommend the use of Dichlor for shock treatment in all pools.
