"Gas" is short for:

bulletElemental Chlorine
bulletGas Chlorine

Chlorine gas (elemental chlorine), the purest form of chlorine, is a greenish-yellow gas which is extremely toxic and corrosive.  Gas chlorine contains 100% available chlorine.

Gas chlorine, a hazardous material, is shipped under pressure (usually in 100 to 150 pound steel cylinders) as an amber-colored liquid.  For water chlorination the gas is discharged from the cylinder and dissolved in the water stream using specially-designed chlorination equipment.

Normally, chlorination with elemental or gas chlorine is reserved for large commercial pools.  It should only be used where operating personnel are trained and experienced in chlorine handling and are on duty at all times when the pool is open.  Although chemical costs are lower for elemental gas chlorine, safety must be considered.  More elaborate and expensive feeding equipment is required.  Elemental chlorine has a very low pH and actually lowers the pH of the water when used.  A typical site using elemental chlorine would include a pump for continuous feeding of pH increaser.

Gas chlorine is extremely dangerous and Expert Pool & Spa recommends that only qualified personnel interact with gas chlorine.  This is the same stuff Saddam Hussein puts in his chemical bombs!  Proper handling and training can not be stressed enough!
