The spa cover takes a tremendous amount of abuse just sitting there covering your spa.  Sunlight, rain and snow, dirt and leaves all get the cover dirty quickly and also shorten the life of the cover.  Most spa covers are made with a Styrofoam core surrounded by a plastic vapor barrier and then covered with marine grade vinyl.  Spa covers are not designed to support much weight other than snow on the top of them which should be removed after each snowfall.  Kids and dogs should be kept off the top of the cover if at all possible.  Sometimes tree branches or other foreign items will fall on the top of the cover and can cause damage to the cover.  If the object punctured a hole through the vinyl and the plastic vapor barrier and into the Styrofoam, the cover will slowly begin to absorb moisture.  The Styrofoam will act like a sponge and actually absorb water and become extremely heavy and also inefficient.  If you live in a snow region, the snow that falls on the spa cover in the winter should stay there and not melt off if the spa cover is in good shape.  If it is water logged or beyond it's useful life span the heat from the spa will be absorbed by the water logged cover cores and then transferred to the outside of the cover resulting in melting the snow off the cover and wasting the heat inside the spa.  You should replace a "heavy" cover right away as it is actually costing you money and sucking heat out of the spa.

The outside of the cover can be cleaned with a scrub brush and water and GLB TLC if desired to remove dirt and grime build up.  The clean and dry cover can be treated with Armor All or other similar vinyl protectant if desired but will likely collect dust and get dirty quicker if treated.

Sagging cover cores can be removed from the encasement and "flipped over" and re-inserted to help keep their shape and prevent puddling on the top of the cover.  Sometimes this is very difficult and the zippers on the encasements can become fragile with age.  This may not even be possible depending on the shape of the cover.

Some spa owners try to make their own covers with poor results.  The foam core must be protected from moisture with a plastic vapor barrier and it must be air tight or it will not work and the foam will simply absorb moisture.

We sell two brands of spa covers.  One is the traditional foam core spa cover which is made by Sunstar Spa Tops and is of the highest quality.  The other cover is a solid cover which can support more weight on the top of it such as an animal or small kids and is made by Be-Lite.  We also carry a complete line of cover lifting devices which aid the bather in removing and storing the spa cover safely.  They make using the spa much easier as there is no more wrestling with the spa cover.

We also carry Spa Blankets which are a closed cell foam blanket which lays directly on top of the water to help keep heat in and debris and dirt out.  They are a great addition to any spa cover or a good choice if your spa cover is near its end of useful life.
