Spa maintenance is relatively easy for most residential spas.  In general there are procedures you should perform on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.  Maintenance should be adjusted according to bather load, spa usage and optional components installed on the spa like Ozonators and such.

Probably the most important factor in maintaining your spa is keeping the spa water chemistry properly balanced.  For more information about your spa's water chemistry please visit the Chemistry link to the left.  For more information about water chemistry in general please visit the Water Chemistry Section.  For a chart of the proper Water Chemistry Levels visit the Water Testing Section.

The next step in spa maintenance is "Housekeeping" or cleaning.  Vacuuming, spa cover maintenance and filter servicing include the more physical aspects of spa care.  Draining and cleaning of the spa and the filter cartridge are essential to clean water and a more enjoyable spa experience.

We can divide the routine spa maintenance tasks into a few categories as follows:

bulletDaily
bulletCheck the water level in the spa on a daily basis.  Not enough water can damage the spa and cause the pump to run dry.  Too much water will not usually hurt the spa and it will simply spill over the side when a bather enters the spa.
bulletTest and Adjust the spa water chemistry.  Testing at least once per week minimum is required.  Maintain the Sanitizer, pH and Alkalinity levels correctly.
bulletCheck for proper operation and circulation.  Especially if your spa is operating outside and in the winter freezing months.  Moving water will not freeze so circulation is critical for freeze prevention.
bulletCheck for leaks
bulletUse the spa!

bulletWeekly
bulletShock Treat the water with 4-8 oz Oxy-Brite
bulletAdd Spa Water Clarifier
bulletAdd Spa Stain and Scale protectant
bulletAdd Enzyme treatment
bulletAdd a small amount of Foam-Out
bulletTest water at least once per week minimum
bulletVacuum spa if needed
bulletClean scum/water line around perimeter of spa
bulletClean skimmer and pump baskets if so equipped
bulletCheck spa and equipment for leaks

bulletMonthly
bulletRemove and clean spa filter cartridge.  Either a simple "spray out" or a chemical cleaning depending on spa usage
bulletClean spa cover
bulletTest G.F.C.I. protected circuits on spa electrical service and also on any surrounding outside or local electrical circuits including outlets and breakers

bulletEvery Three Months
bulletDrain and clean the spa.  Change spa water.
bulletChemically clean the spa filter cartridge or exchange the cartridge with a clean reserve filter cartridge.
bulletHave a "spa party"!
