Here you will find a brief problem solver for spas including water chemistry and basic operation problems.

bulletWater Chemistry Problems

bulletCloudy or Slimy Water - Cloudy water is usually a result of low sanitizer levels.  Be sure to keep the sanitizer levels at 3.0 ppm or higher.  You can add granular sanitizer such as Sodium Dichlor or Oxy-Brite to oxidize any bacteria in the water causing the cloudy water and that should bring the water back around in a day or so.

bulletColored Water - Colored water is usually caused by metals in the water or if the spa is filled with "soft" water.  Use a sequestering agent such as Sequa-Sol or Super Sequa-Sol if there are metals present in the water.  Use GLB Rendezvous Protect Plus weekly in the spa to prevent scaling and to remove metals from the spa water from adding water to the spa.  Spas should never be filled with "soft" water from water softeners.  Soft water will attack metals in the spa and cause them to precipitate into the water causing color changes in the water and damage to the spa.  Never fill the spa with hot water.  Always use cold water to prevent damage to the spa heater.  Unless you have a 500 gallon water heater it will not make the spa heat up any faster.

bulletpH and Alkalinity - pH and Alkalinity problems are usually only discovered by testing the water.  Your pH or Alkalinity can be out of range and the water can be crystal clear.  pH and Alkalinity are the most important factors in water chemistry.  If they fall out of balance the water can damage the components in the spa.  Because we are dealing with a relatively small amount of water in a spa, the levels can easily change rapidly.  Bather load, foreign contaminants, rain and make-up water can all affect the pH and Alkalinity of the water.  It is much less damaging to the spa to have the pH /Alkalinity too high than too low.  See the chart for recommended parameters.

bulletOzone - Ozonators can stop working if the injector becomes plugged or if the bulb burns out on the Ozonator.  When you open the cover on the spa you should be able to smell the Ozone in the spa.  If you cant smell it then check the injector area and the bulb.  Also be sure the small tubing from the Ozonator to the injector is not full of water or a check valve has failed.  See the section on Ozone Purification HERE.

bulletParticles in Water - Particles can come from inside the heater housing or from the walls of the plumbing.  Particles are created from improper water chemistry over a long period of time creating build up on the interior surfaces of the spa components and plumbing.  When the particles become large enough the flake off and make their way into the main body of water.  Depending on the type of particles, it can be difficult to completely remove all the build up from the components of the spa.  Contact us for further information.

bulletComponent Problems

bulletSpa Trips Breaker - If the spa trips the circuit breaker then it is an indication that there is a component failure or an electrical component is wet.  Try and turn the heat off and reset the breaker.  If it will reset with the heater off, try and turn the heat back on.  If the breaker trips again then it is likely that the heater has failed.  You can try and disconnect other components of the spa and reset the breaker to determine what component has failed.  Contact us for service and repairs if you have a problem.

bulletPump Not Pumping - If the spa pump will turn on but water does not circulate it is likely that there is an air lock in the suction plumbing of the pump.  This usually occurs after draining and refilling the spa.  You can loosen the drain plug or union connection on the pump until water flows out and then try to start the pump again.  Be sure to bleed any air from the filter housing if applicable.  If the pump does not turn on at all then there could be a heater high limit reset tripped.  Check the heater or control panel for a small reset button.

bulletNo Heat - if the spa is not heating at all check the heater or control panel for a tripped heater high limit reset button.  Be sure the spa filter(s) are clean also.  The heater will not turn on if there is inadequate water flow through the heater which can be caused by low water levels in the spa, air lock in the plumbing, congested filters or heater high limit trips.

bulletSpa Looses Water - This can be caused by many things.  Check the pump/heater area for signs of leaks.  Check the plumbing around the spa going to the jets for leaks also.  If there are leaks by the pump/heater be sure to turn off the electricity to the spa can contact us for service right away.  Try to determine the amount of water loss in a 24 hour period.  Freeze damage can also be a culprit of new leaks on freshly filled spas in the springtime.
