Chasing Alkalinity and ph

Postby turk20 on Wed Feb 10, 2010 1:12 pm

I have a fairly new pool using the Hayward automatic system for balance - I had a 0 to 40 PPM for alkalinity and 7.5 PH - was told to bring up AKAL by adding Alkalinity up at 4 lbs per 40 PPM as I have about 20K gallons After adding 16lbs , 4 one day and 12 a week later, my PH spiked and the automatic acid system kicked in and drained 15 gal of 50 50 mix in about 2 weeks - should last 6 to 8 months - PH came in line but ALKA now back to 40 PPM - What am I dong wrong or do you have a suggestion - seems I add alka to bring up and acid to bring down

pH decreaser will lower both alkalinity and pH. A seprate product is used to raise either the pH or the Alkalinity. Sounds like possibly one of your sensors is out of calibration...
