cyanuric acid

Postby jerri on Fri Jun 06, 2008 12:14 pm

Help....I've drained 50% of my pool twice in the last two months and cannot get the cyanuric acid low enough to get a good chemical reading. According the to home depot (where you can rent the equipment to drain the water), and the pool store that checks my water----many people in this area are having the same problem.
Is there a solution?

I would say not to worry about it at this point. If you want to lower it, you will have to remove and replace more water from the pool. That is the only way to lower the level.

it's me again....
Since May of this year, I have drained my pool seven times, at least 2/3 of the way down because my stabilizer is too high. There hasn't been any activity in the pool in well over a month, but I was having a problem with algea growing in the spa and on the sides.
I took a water sample in again and the stabilizer was over 300, which to me means that the other chemicals won't work. After I drained the pool, the algea is cleared up.
So, my question is, why does the stabilizer keep going up? What can I do to prevent this? I know that all pools are not the same but I've never had this problem so often before.
Thanks in advance for your help.

If you are using Tri-Chlor tablets or Sodium Dichlor in the pool for chlorine, it is a "stabilized" chlorine which can raise the stabilizer levels. Keep in mind, however, stabilizer has absolutely nothing to do with algae growth or the inability of other chemicals to work. A test reading of cyanuric acid levels at 300 or below is nothing to worry about in our opinion. Algae will only grow if there is sunlight, warmth and a lack of sanitizer in the water. SOunds to me like your chlorine levels are way too low and allowed algae to grow. Some algaes are more resistant to chlorine than others so keeping a free chlorine level, (not combined chlorine) at or above 3.0ppm is recommended at all times...
